Nipple Reduction

Large nipples or areolas (the darkened skin surrounding the nipple) can be due to a woman’s individual genetics, pregnancy, breast feeding or normal aging. Women who have become unsatisfied with the size of the areola on the breast, or the width or projection of the nipple now have the option to correct this deformity. A better proportion of nipple or areola size to the breast also can enhance the overall appearance of a woman’s breasts.

Reasons for Considering Nipple Reduction or Areola Reduction:

  • Large areolas compared to the size of the breast.
  • Nipples that are wide or project from the breast.
  • Widened nipples or scarring from previous breast surgery.
  • Nipples that have an irregular, non-circular shape.

General Nipple or Areola Reduction Procedure

Nipple or areolar reduction can be done under local or general anesthesia depending on each patient’s wishes and the extent of reduction needed. Nipple reduction is achieved by removing part of the nipple itself. The part of the nipple removed from the breast depends on what appearance each patient wants to accomplish with the procedure. Areolar reduction usually requires an incision around the areola with removing part of the darkened skin to decrease its size.

Nipple or areolar reduction can be performed in combination with other breast or cosmetic procedures such as breast implant placement, breast lift, or a tummy tuck.

Recovery Process

When performed alone, nipple reduction or areolar reduction is very well tolerated. Dressings placed after the procedure aid in the healing process. Mild pain may be experienced and is well controlled with oral pain medications.
